Huskers need win today to go bowling

? To say the Nebraska football team’s seniors have seen some change the last four years would be an understatement.

Consider that there are 21 seniors, and there have been 22 assistant coaches in that time. That includes three defensive coordinators, three secondary coaches and three running-backs coaches.

“It’s been a roller coaster ride for these guys, so it’s important that they leave on a good note and good taste in their mouths,” coach Bill Callahan said.

The seniors will play their last game at Memorial Stadium today against Colorado. If the Cornhuskers don’t win and become bowl-eligible, it will be the seniors’ final college game.

The class is 33-17, the worst four-year mark since the Huskers were 14-25-1 from 1958 to ’61.

While the seniors try to avoid the unenviable distinction of being on the first team since 1961 to post a losing record — and the first since 1968 not to go to a bowl game — their four-year run hasn’t been all bad.

The 2001 team reached the national championship Rose Bowl game and finished 11-2.

The 2002 team slipped to 7-7 and lost to Mississippi in the Independence Bowl.

Last year’s team rebounded to go 9-3 in the regular season, but Frank Solich was fired as head coach anyway. The Huskers ended 10-3 after an Alamo Bowl win over Michigan State.

The transition to Callahan’s West Coast system, along with a change in defensive philosophy under Kevin Cosgrove, has led to the Huskers’ 5-5 record.
