KU golfers roll into final

Current, former Jayhawks to square off for tournament title

Old-school and new-school golfers from Kansas University will clash today in the finals of the Kansas Golf Assn. Fourball Championship.

Former Jayhawks Jay Hepler and Tyler Shelton will tee off at 7:30 a.m. against current KU golfers Kevin Ward and Gary Woodland for the tournament title.

Hepler and Shelton played at Kansas during the mid-1990s, and Ward and Woodland are two of the top players on the current KU roster. About a decade separates the pairs in age, but barely a stroke sets them apart on the scorecard.

It should make for a doozy of a final match.

“It’s the old guys against the young guys,” Shelton said. “It’ll be a lot of fun.”

Disposing of younger guys is nothing new to Hepler and Shelton — they’ve done it all week, most notably Friday in a 3 and 2 semifinal victory against current Jayhawks Jason Sigler and Luke Trammell.

Sigler and Trammell entered Friday’s quarterfinal and semifinal rounds as arguably the hottest duo on the course. Their 9-under-par score after just 13 holes Thursday was a testament as to how dangerous the juniors-to-be were. They cruised through their quarterfinal match in just 14 holes before being bounced in the semifinals by the scorching alumni.

Hepler and Shelton birdied seven of the 16 holes they played and never trailed.

“I have a pretty good partner — Tyler’s played real well — and we’ve just been trying to hit fairways and greens,” Shelton said.

If any of the young pups are capable of toppling Hepler and Shelton, they would be Ward and Woodland. The pair has been deserving of the “dynamic duo” label because of their consistently calm demeanor and knack for picking each other up.

Friday was a prime example of how well they work together.

After coasting to a six-hole victory in the quarterfinals, they were unable to shake Dane Ogden and Chris Hutchens in the semifinals. After nine holes, Ward and Woodland were stuck at 1-up.

No sweat. A quick water break in the clubhouse changed everything.

Woodland stepped into the tee box at No. 10 and crushed a beautiful shot down the fairway. His second shot was even better, as he drained an eagle from about 100 yards away.

“We really struggled on the front nine and couldn’t get anything going, but then he holed out on 10,” Ward said. “That was big because we went 2-up. That was the difference.”

Ward logged birdies on 13 and 16 to end it.

Jayhawks have won three of the last four KGA Fourball titles. Given the all-Kansas final, a duo from the KU golf family is destined to return the honor to the crimson and blue. It’s only a matter of whether the undergraduates or alumni will prevail.

“It’s our home course,” Woodland said. “We know what we can and can’t do, so we’re just going to go out and play our game and see what happens.

“They’re good players and I’ve heard a lot about them. It’ll be a good grudge match and I’m sure it’ll come down to the last holes. Hopefully we’ll play as well as we did today.”
