Defendant convicted in Wichita shooting

? A Wichita man has been found guilty of first-degree murder in a January shooting.

A Sedgwick County jury deliberated less than two hours before convicting John Kirkpatrick, 23, on Thursday. He faces a life prison sentence with no possibility of parole for 20 years.

Prosecutors said Kirkpatrick fired three shots into the door of an apartment after arguing with the occupants over who had the fastest car. One of the bullets hit Jacob Williams, 27, in the pelvis and killed him.

Two other men are also accused of a role in the Jan. 23 killing: Thomas Wright, who testified at Kirkpatrick’s trial, pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of aiding a felon and is scheduled for sentencing Monday; Garrod Farha was called as a witness in the Kirkpatrick trial but refused to testify. He is scheduled to stand trial next month.
