Lawrence, area classes canceled

Arctic-like conditions in the area have led school officials to cancel classes Tuesday for Lawrence. Julie Boyle, information director for the school district, said the decision was made at 6 a.m. to close all public schools because of cold and ice.

An announcement was also made that Tuesday night’s scheduled matchup between the Free State Firebird boys basketball team and top-ranked Olathe South has also been postponed. The two teams, both in the top 10 for Class 6A, will tip-off at 7 p.m. next Tuesday, Feb. 3, at Free State High School.

The following area schools have also canceled classes:

  • Perry-Lecompton
  • Basehor-Linwood
  • Tonganoxie
  • DeSoto
  • McLouth
  • DeSoto
  • Bishop Seabury
  • Raintree Montessori
  • Montessori Children’s School
  • Veritas Christian School

Additional closings include Douglas County Senior Services, Lawrence Art Center Preschool, Strategic Learning Center, Immanuel Lutheran Childhood Center, the Lawrence Catholic School, First Presbyterian Preschool, Johnny Appleseed Preschool and Small World Day Care.
