Hallman, Kemp solid, but KU women tumble

? The Kansas University women’s basketball team had three players score in double figures on Tuesday, but a solid shooting night by Creighton led to a 68-63 victory for the Bluejays at the Civic Auditorium.

Junior Erica Hallman led KU with 20 points and six assists, and junior Crystal Kemp posted a huge game with 16 points and 17 rebounds.

Senior Aquanita Burras scored 13 and grabbed seven rebounds for the Jayhawks.

KU coach Bonnie Henrickson was not pleased with the loss, but saw some good things from her squad.

“The positives are, we were able to make a run,” Henrickson said. “We pressed, made some steals. We said to them, ‘Are we going to be a team where, we’re down eight, are we going to be down 15 or are we going to be down four?’

“I was pleased we were able to make a run.”

The Jayhawks forced nine steals and 15 turnovers.

“In their pressure, we had the wrong people taking shots,” Henrickson said. “We had post players taking 15-foot jump shots without any rebounders. … Offensively, we really struggled.”

Henrickson lauded the solid play of post player Kemp, who posted another impressive line.

“I thought she got her hands on a lot in the second half, especially,” Henrickson said. “If there was a swarm in the middle, she came out with it.”

Angie Janis led the way for Creighton with 24 points on 10-of-19 shooting. Laura Spanheimer added 18 points for the Jays (6-3), while Kristi Woodard added 16 points and a team-high nine rebounds.

Overall, the Bluejays shot 23-of-55 from the field (41.8 percent) but sank 18 of 19 free throws.

“We just didn’t defend our tendencies well,” Henrickson said. “It was disappointing to struggle that much in a defensive effort.”

KU (6-5) will return Tuesday to Allen Fieldhouse to face San Diego State. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
