Jayhawks still adding players for 2005

Kansas University continued to solidify its 2005 football recruiting class Monday, receiving two more commitments and signing two junior-college players to national letters of intent.

Along with the signings of California juco standouts Marcus Anderson and Paul Como, KU picked up nonbinding oral commitments from two Texas preps — tight end Josh Bell from Hitchcock, and defensive lineman Jeff Wheeler from Houston.

The four additions Monday bring the number of known recruits for the 2005 season to 19 — six junior-college signees and 13 high-school commitments.

And, with the completed paperwork signed by Anderson and Como, the Jayhawks will have all six of their known juco transfers in Lawrence next month to begin classes and offseason workouts with the team. Four others inked letters of intent Wednesday, the first day mid-year transfers were allowed to sign.

It’s what KU coach Mark Mangino and his staff have strived for when recruiting junior-college athletes — the opportunity to get them on campus in time for spring practices. Current players Jermial Ashley, Theo Baines and Rodney Harris took that rout, and it paid off with immediate success.

The Jayhawks will hope for much of the same out of Anderson, a 6-foot-3, 280-pound lineman from the City College of San Francisco, who chose KU over several western schools, including Washington State and Arizona State. Current KU quarterback Jason Swanson also attended CCSF, but Anderson told rivals.com that former KU center Joe Vaughn was his host. Vaughn, a former junior-college lineman himself, eventually became the Big 12 Conference Newcomer of the Year his first season at KU.

Anderson told Jon Kirby of rivals.com that KU is looking at him as an offensive tackle.

“But I could play anywhere at either guard or center,” Anderson said. “It really doesn’t matter as long as I’m playing.”

Como seems to have similar versatility, only on defense. A 6-2, 240-pound defensive end/linebacker from Saddleback College in Mission Viejo, Calif., Como was recruited to KU to play defensive end, a position vacated by the loss of David McMillan. Como chose KU over Oregon and Colorado State.

“He’s a physical, tough and strong player,” Saddleback coach Mark McElroy told rivals. “He’s very dedicated to the game of football. This year he worked real hard in the offseason and dropped 20 pounds.”

All four of Monday’s additions visited Lawrence during the weekend. In all, approximately 12 players visited, and already have pledged to play for the Jayhawks next year. An eighth, La Puente, Calif., offensive lineman Jose Rodriguez, committed in June before taking his official visit.

The 13 known high-school commitments can sign their letters of intent Feb. 2.
