Eudora splits twinbill with Silver Lake

Abel boys give relative plenty to cheer about in 64-51 EHS victory; Cardinals' girls thumped, 61-30

? Eudora High boys basketball coach Scott Stein might not want to admit it, but he’s known for his booming voice.

But Tuesday night, there was someone louder than Stein in the EHS gym.

Eudora's Mark Abel (20) manuevers to keep possession against Silver Lake's Nick de Souza. EHS split a doubleheader Tuesday at Eudora. The Eudora boys won, 64-51, but the girls lost, 61-30.

“Oh, I sure hope I’m not,” said a smiling Jerry Abel, the grandmother of Cardinal Luke Abel and great-aunt of EHS guard Mark Abel. “I just get so excited during these games.”

Jerry Abel had plenty of reason to raise her voice in support of the Cardinals on Tuesday night because Eudora routed Silver Lake, 64-51, thanks to 32 combined points from the Abel boys.

But even with the satisfying victory, Stein — whose team improved to 2-2 thanks to a win in its last game before the winter break — wasn’t ready to admit his was the loudest voice at EHS.

“Hey, Luke, who’s louder, me or your grandmother?” Stein asked.

Luke Abel didn’t hesitate: “About the same — unless you’re mad.”

Mark Abel, who led the Cardinals with 20 points, agreed with cousin Luke, who tallied 14, saying that Jerry Abel’s outbursts probably were more on the positive side. “Coach only gets really loud when he gets upset,” Mark Abel said.

Early Tuesday, there was little for Stein to get distraught over, because the Cardinals took complete control.

Eudora High's Michelle Deluna (12) drives against Silver Lake's Whitney Gillman.

Mark Abel outscored the Eagles 10-6 by himself, hitting just about every shot he threw up — including a no-look, over-the-head fling while he was getting fouled that fell through the hoop.

That gem had Jerry on her feet, applauding her nephew’s effort.

Despite the Abels’ strong effort in the first half — the two combined for 23 points; Silver Lake scored 15 over the same stretch — Stein’s team lost its focus in the second half.

Silver Lake cut the deficit to single digits late in the third, but a little inspiration, this time from Stein, quickly got the Cards back on the offensive.

“Not even college teams can keep their focus, so I guess I can’t really expect for a high school team to completely do it, either,” Stein said.

Silver Lake girls 61, Eudora 30

This one was over quickly. Silver Lake scored 18 points in the third quarter alone, while it took Eudora three quarters to get there.

Alissa Hamilton, Carrie Lister and Kayla Moyer each scored six points for the 1-3 Cardinals, which lost their third straight.
