Athletes of the week

Ibrahim Bah

Lawrence High

Class: Senior

Sport: Soccer

The week: With the LHS soccer team stuck in an offensive slump, Bah stepped up Tuesday against a tough Shawnee Mission Northwest squad. The senior intercepted the Cougar goalkeeper’s attempt to clear the ball in the 31st minute and rocketed the Lions’ first goal in four games. He then assisted another goal, giving him a hand in four of the Lions’ five goals this season.

Comment: “All season, our defense has been strong and our offense has needed confidence,” LHS co-coach Matt Makens said. “He leads with his confidence, and you just hope everyone can follow his lead.”

Erica Ogle

Baldwin

Class: Senior

Sport: Cross Country

The week: Ogle led the Bulldogs to a sensational showing Saturday at the massive Rim Rock Farm High School Classic, placing 18th out of 159 runners in the gold division, with most of the runners coming from much bigger schools. Ogle completed the difficult 4,000-meter race in 16:02.41, leading the Baldwin girls to a ninth-place finish.

Comment: “Her leadership is real important to us,” Baldwin coach Mike Spielman said. “She’s ran in a lot of big meets, and been All-State all three years so far.

“She’s been a real asset to our team.”
