Ex-Lion to coach at Army

Lawrence native John Mumford is a college head football coach again.

Army coach Todd Berry was fired Monday, and Mumford was named interim head coach by Lt. Gen. William J. Lennox Jr., superintendent of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, N.Y.

Mumford, 46, has been the Army’s defensive line coach for the last four years. He was head coach at Southeast Missouri State from 1990 to ’99.

“With seven games remaining on our schedule, John Mumford will provide our program with leadership as we continue the season,” Lennox said. “He possesses a wealth of head-coaching experience, and his knowledge of the offense and defense will be helpful.”

Berry compiled a 3-35 record since taking over as head coach in December of 1999. The Black Knights are 0-6 this season, have lost 12 in a row and have only one win in their last 17 games.

“We will work diligently in the weeks ahead to identify the next person to lead our football program,” Lennox said.

A 1979 graduate of Pittsburg State, Mumford lettered three times at tight end for the Gorillas. He also lettered as a tight end at Lawrence High in the mid-’70s. He worked for two years as a graduate assistant under Don Fambrough at Kansas University before moving to South Dakota University, where he spent eight years as an assistant coach.
