Lions win some, lose some
Lawrence splits 2-2 with SM West, SM Northwest
The Lawrence High girls tennis team didn’t lose Wednesday.
But it didn’t win, either, as the host Lions earned a pair of 2-2 splits against Shawnee Mission West and Shawnee Mission Northwest.
Against the Vikings, the Lions’ doubles wins balanced two singles losses. The Lions earned a 2-2 draw with the Cougars as each squad won a singles and doubles match.
No. 1 singles player Sydney Lartigue, a senior who missed Monday’s match against Free State because of illness, played only doubles Wednesday.
Senior Ashley Woodward and junior Amy Bullerman won two matches, and Lartigue and senior Danielle Huff were 1-1.
Sarah Wilson earned a win at No. 1 singles against SMNW.
Woodward and Bullerman’s wins were impressive because it was the first time they played doubles together.
“It’s been tough, but we’re both doing all right, both finishing strong,” Woodward said.
Although the Lions didn’t win, LHS coach Dick Wedel was pleased.
“It still was a beautiful day and we got to play two teams, and that’s great,” Wedel said. “I thought we played well.”
Lartigue said Lawrence had made significant strides that would help the team in postseason play.
“We’ve improved so much from the beginning of the season,” she said. “I think we’re ready.”
The Lions travel Saturday to Shawnee Mission East for the Sunflower League tournament.
