Infiniti Pro Series: Wrecks, rain mar Freedom 100 race

? Craig Dollansky fractured his lower spine when his car crashed into the outside wall during the Infiniti Pro Series Freedom 100 Saturday.

Dollansky was admitted to Methodist Hospital, said Dr. Henry Bock, the medical director for Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

No other details were immediately available.

Dollansky was hurt on the 12th lap when his car spun in turn two. The car slid across a grassy patch near the warmup lane, then turned and went up the track hitting the outside wall, nose first.

Another driver, Thiago Medeiros, hurt his left knee in an unrelated accident. He was released from the hospital after X-rays revealed no other injuries.

Rain delayed the race after 12 laps, only two of which were run under green. The race was postponed until this morning, when it will resume with the 13th lap.

The Infiniti Pro Series is the Indy Racing League’s developmental league. The Freedom 100 is the fourth of 12 races this season.

Medeiros, who is second in the circuit’s points standings, tangled with Matt Beardsley on the first lap. Beardsley spun in turn three, skidded up the track and was broadsided when Medeiros tried to avoid the car by going outside. Both cars hit the wall hard, and the collision with Medeiros ripped the rear suspension off Beardsley’s car. Beardsley was not hurt.

The accident was a precursor to a frantic start that knocked four drivers out of the race in the first 12 laps.

Also knocked out of the race was Arie Luyendyk Jr., son of the two-time Indy 500 winner. He pulled onto pit road with the car smoking after three laps. It was later determined to be an electrical problem.

Former Indy starter Billy Roe was knocked out after five laps because of a gear box problem.
