Daughter pleads no contest to murder

Father says he's forgiven 20-year-old in wife's slaying

? A 20-year-old Augusta woman was sentenced Wednesday to 20 years in prison without parole for her part in her mother’s death last year.

Jennifer Self pleaded no contest April 29 to first-degree murder, meaning she did not admit guilt but acknowledged the strength of the state’s case against her. If convicted in a trial, she could have faced a sentence of 50 years without parole.

Self and her boyfriend were arrested after authorities found the body of Patricia Self, 46, in the burned wreckage of the Self family’s home near Augusta on March 19, 2002.

Patricia Self had been stabbed multiple times with three different knives before alcohol was ignited to set the house on fire, authorities said. Death was attributed to head trauma.

The boyfriend, Joshua Robertson, was convicted last fall of first-degree murder, aggravated burglary and arson in the same crime.

Robertson was sentenced to 50 years in prison without parole.

Jennifer Self spent much of the time since her arrest being treated at Larned State Hospital.

She had been scheduled for trial in December but was found incompetent to help in her defense.

When sentencing Self on Wednesday, Butler County District Judge Mike Ward asked the Department of Corrections to provide mental health treatment for her.

Self’s father, Roger Self, said Wednesday that he had forgiven his daughter. He said he has never asked her what happened after he went to went to work on the day of the killing.
