Longhorns dominate Big 12 swim meet
Austin, Texas ? Brendan Hansen broke his record in the 200-yard breaststroke and led Texas to its seventh straight men’s Big 12 swimming and diving championships Saturday.
Texas won with 1,030 points, Texas A&M finished second at 908, and Missouri finished third with 760 points.
Hansen won in 1:55.40 seconds, breaking the record of 1:55.68 that he set last year.
Tanica Jamison led UT’s women to their fifth consecutive team title in the women’s division by winning the 100-yard freestyle in 49.28 and leading the Longhorns relay team to a title in the 400 freestyle relay.
The Longhorns won with 1,031 points, Texas A&M finished second (694) and Missouri finished third (510). Kansas was fourth in the six-team meet with 4711¼2 points.
Freshman Gina Gnatzig turned in KU’s best individual performance of the meet with a third-place finish in the 200 backstroke. Her time of 2:01.05 set a school record.
Longhorn freshmen Aaron Peirsol and Elizabeth Wycliffe set records in the final day of competition. Peirsol won the men’s 200 backstroke in 1:41.36, and Wycliffe broke the women’s 200 backstroke record with a swim of 1:57.24.
