Bliss accused of spying on K-State

? Dave Bliss’ former administrative assistant alleged Monday that the former Baylor coach taped a Kansas State men’s basketball practice at Ferrell Center in Waco, Texas.

Laura Collins-Hays said a live feed of a KSU practice was shown on a TV monitor in the athletic department.

Collins-Hays told the Dallas Morning News she was working at her desk in January 2002 when Debbie Penney, administrative assistant to women’s basketball coach Kim Mulkey-Robertson, told her she had been flipping the channels on her television set and stopped when she saw the Kansas State men practicing in the Ferrell Center, the basketball arena.

“It concerned her,” Collins-Hays said.

Collins-Hays said Penney asked her to make sure she wasn’t mistaken. Collins-Hays said she looked out on the Ferrell Center court and confirmed that Penney was watching the Kansas State team, which was in Waco to play Baylor.

Collins-Hays said the incident was reported to authorities, but nothing came of it. Contacted Monday, Penney said, “I’m sorry, I don’t want to discuss this. It’s not a good thing for me to do.”

Tom Gilbert, a spokesman for Kansas State coach Jim Wooldridge, said the coach would not comment.

“Right now, we don’t know the whole story,” Gilbert said.

Asked about the possibility of a visiting team’s practice being shown live in the home team’s athletic department offices, another Big 12 Conference coach, speaking on condition of anonymity, said, “I can’t believe anyone would do that.”

Big 12 assistant commissioner Lori Ebihara said she didn’t think monitoring an opponent’s practice was covered in the NCAA manual.

AD Stanton to leave early

Waco, Texas — Tom Stanton, who resigned earlier this month as athletic director at Baylor amid an investigation stemming from the death of a basketball player, will not remain on the job until his replacement is hired.

Stanton announced Tuesday he would step down immediately. David Brooks, Baylor’s vice president for finance and administration, will oversee the athletic department until a permanent replacement is found.

Stanton resigned Aug. 8, but had been allowed to stay on until the university filled the job.

Stanton said the strain of the investigation into Patrick Dennehy’s death, NCAA violations within the men’s basketball program and coach Dave Bliss’ attempted cover-up of those violations pushed him to step down now.

“These past few months have been the most difficult period of my life,” Stanton said in a statement.

Extradition hearing delayed

Chestertown, Md. — A judge agreed Tuesday to keep a former Baylor basketball player in jail for up to 60 more days as prosecutors work to extradite him to Texas.

Judge Floyd Parks did not set a new hearing date for Carlton Dotson, 21, who is charged with killing former teammate Patrick Dennehy near Waco, Texas. Dotson, his mother and his three attorneys attended Tuesday’s seven-minute hearing. It was the first time Dotson appeared in court since July 22, the day after he was arrested.

Bears lose Taylor to Texas

Houston — Junior forward Kenny Taylor said Tuesday he was leaving Baylor’s beleaguered basketball program, but was staying in the Big 12 by transferring to Texas. Taylor’s decision came a day after Lawrence Roberts, Baylor’s top scorer and rebounder last season, transferred to Mississippi State.
