Eudora

Shot fired into house

A Douglas County family found itself in the line of fire last week.

Kale and Brenda Woods were sitting in their home southwest of Eudora at 9:30 p.m. Sunday when a bullet sped through the living room window, authorities said Friday.

The .40-caliber bullet pierced a couch inches below where Brenda Woods was sitting.

Sheriff’s deputies searched the area and found paper targets attached to a tree about a quarter-mile from the Woods’ property.

“You’re not playing with a toy; you’re playing with a high-powered weapon that could definitely kill,” Kale Woods said. “And this came within 12 inches of injuring someone.”

The Woods’ two daughters were playing outside at the time.

Sheriff Rick Trapp said deputies collected about 40 spent shell casings near the targets. They ask anyone with information to call Douglas County CrimeStoppers at 843-TIPS.

Baldwin

Police arrest two suspected of rape

Baldwin Police have arrested two Lawrence men in connection with the rape of a Baldwin woman in July at her apartment. A 26-year-old man was arrested Friday and a 29-year-old Saturday.

Police said the rape occurred sometime between 2 a.m. and 5 a.m. July 13 when the woman allowed two men into her apartment. Baldwin Police Chief Mike McKenna said the two men forced the woman, in her 40s, into the bedroom and assaulted her. Police were called after the woman sought help from neighbors. She was treated at Lawrence Memorial Hospital and released.

Ottawa

Shoppers bargain hunt at citywide garage sale

Area shoppers flocked Saturday to Ottawa, following fluorescent-colored signs on telephone poles in hopes of finding great bargains.

More than 50 households registered with the Ottawa Area Chamber of Commerce for the first citywide garage sale and were listed on a city map for shoppers. Several other households planned sales for the same day.

Esther McClure participated in the sale and said business had been so good that she had almost nothing left to sell. She said she liked the citywide sale idea because it attracted people from around the area.

“I think it was very good for the community,” she said. “It brought in people from out-of-town. They were from all over.”
