Free State volleyball goes 2-1

? Free State went 2-1 at a high school volleyball quadrangular on Tuesday at Shawnee Heights.

The Firebirds beat Shawnee Mission Northwest, 16-14, 15-9; and Garden City, 15-6, 16-14; but lost to Shawnee Heights, 15-3, 16-14.

“Shawnee Heights is always good,” FSHS coach Nancy Hopkins said. “We didn’t play well the first game, but the second game we played well and had a chance to win it.”

Hopkins cited Linsey Morningstar for her serving, and Jenny Heppert and Jayme Lisher for their hitting.

Free State (10-14) will travel to Blue Valley Northwest on Thursday.

O-South pops FSHS

Olathe  Second-ranked Olathe South was first-rate in overpowering Free State High, 3-0, in boys soccer Tuesday afternoon at Olathe District Activities Center.

“We competed and battled for a good solid 80 minutes,” FSHS coach Jason Pendleton said. “They’re 13-0 and ranked No. 2 in the state. They’re an outstanding team. We competed well, had a couple of good scoring opportunities and couldn’t convert. We battled hard and did some positive things, but we just got beat by a better team.”

Pendleton cited Bryan Spangler for his play on defense.

The Firebirds (7-5-2) will pay tribute to their seniors when they play host to Shawnee Mission North at 4 p.m. Thursday at FSHS.

LHS drops three

Manhattan  Lawrence High’s volleyball team dropped all three games in a quadrangular on Tuesday at Manhattan High.

The Lions, 8-21 overall, lost to Manhattan, 15-2, 15-7; Washburn Rural, 15-4, 15-7; and Topeka Hayden, 15-5, 15-1. Making matters worse, senior Katie Willoughby was injured during the Hayden game, and LHS coach Jo Huntsinger wasn’t sure how long she would be out.

“It’s just really hard to respond to something like that,” Huntsinger said. “It was pretty much our worst night ever, but they say you have to hit bottom before you can look back up.”

LHS returns to action this Saturday at the Emporia Tournament, opening against Blue Valley West at 10 a.m.
