Jamie and Dave Heller, Westwood Hills, announce the birth of their daughter, Ada Marie Heller, Aug. 29, 2002. Grandparents are Lynn and Tom Sheely, and George and Judy Heller, all of Lawrence, and Lynn Heller, Hartland, Mich.

Kevin Stewart and Jennifer Winters Stewart, Lawrence, announce the birth of their son, Cameron Owen Stewart, Sept. 10, 2002, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

Maternal grandparents are Mary and Harry Winters, Lawrence. Paternal grandparents are Mary and Richard Stewart, Lawrence.

Sean Gallagher, a 2000 graduate of Free State High School and a junior at Wabash College in Crawfordsville, Ind., is studying at University College-Dublin in Ireland this fall. He is studying Irish literature and history. Sean is writing for the UCD student newspaper as well as serving as a “foreign correspondent” for Wabash’s student paper, “The Bachelor.”

The Lawrence Barn Dance Assn. will have a family barn dance at 4 p.m. Sunday at the Ecumenical Christian Ministries building, 1204 Oread Ave. The caller will be Jill Allen. Live music will be provided by Natural Causes.

A potluck dinner will be at 5:30 p.m. Attendees should bring two dishes per family, drinking cups and tableware. Drinks are provided. Heather W. Biszantz-Meehan has been listed on the dean’s honor roll list at Southeast Community College in Lincoln, Neb. She is the daughter of Robert and Patricia Biszantz, Lawrence.

A reception is being given in honor of Alberta Snow’s 80th birthday. Family and friends are invited to attend the celebration from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 20 at Union Pacific Depot in Lawrence.

More than 70 descendants of John Bernard and Caroline Emilie Altenbernd Torneden gathered Sept. 22 at the Kanwaka Township Hall to celebrate the 58th Torneden Family Reunion.

Table decorations were designed by Phoebe Schneck. Updated copies of the family tree were distributed by Jeanne Torneden and Jeanne Waisner.

A moment of silence was held for family members lost during the past year. They were Selma Torneden Henak, Verna Kahn, Sue Torneden Nye, Harold Shirk, Dolores Torneden Tillotson, Gladys Tipton, Earl Torneden and Elmer Torneden.

The 2002 reunion committee members were Floyd and Jeanne Torneden, Scott and Jeanne Waisner, all of Lawrence, and Gaylord and Phoebe Schneck, Oskaloosa. The members of the 2003 reunion committee are Neil and Nancy Gantz.

The 52nd Annual Pancake and Sausage Supper will be at 5 p.m. Oct. 21 at the Lone Star Church of the Brethren, 883 E. 800 Road. A free-will offering will be taken.

Jerrin Thompson, Lawrence, will travel to Europe June 9-29, 2003, with delegates from People to People Student Ambassador Programs. He is among 35 students from the Midwest region who have been interviewed and selected for the trip. During the trip, there will be an exchange of meetings with government officials, interaction with students of Jerrin’s age, educational activities and home visits with host families.

Student Ambassadors was founded by Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1956. Since then, more than 100,000 young Americans have traveled throughout 35 countries. As part of the program, Jerrin is responsible for fund-raising and finding sponsors to help pay for the trip. The cost is $4,000.

An account has been established at U.S. Bank, 3500 W. Sixth St., for anyone who may want to donate money for his trip. Jerrin is willing to share his journal, photos and travel experiences.

Jerrin is a ninth-grade student at West Junior High School. He is the son of James and Theresa Thompson, Lawrence. Jerrin does volunteer work for the community and First Regular Missionary Baptist Church.

Violet Rose Blosser, Lawrence, has been honored by Carleton College as a member of the Dean’s List for the 2002-03 academic year. The top 10 percent of students in each class were recognized at the college’s annual opening convocation. She is the daughter of Aaron and Khalila Blosser, Lawrence, and a graduate of Free State High School.

The 2002 Arthur and Greta DeLong Writing Awards honored Goshen College student Elise Hofer for excellence in everyday writing.

Hofer, Lawrence, received third prize for her feature article, “Caterpillars in Black and White,” about Indiana landscape photographer John Hawkins. Hofer, daughter of Rod and Roberta Hofer, graduated from Free State High School.

Her essay has been published in “Exposition 22,” a new collection of model essays from Expository Writing classes at Goshen College.

Many area high school students were named Kansas Honor Scholars by the Kansas University Alumni Association and the KU Endowment Association. Casey George, Quinton Keen, Bryan Kennedy, Kalli Keen, Jon Pretz and Peyton Yeoman, all of Baldwin, have entered cattle in the 29th annual North American International Livestock Exposition.

The exposition is recognized as the world’s largest purebred livestock show with more than 21,000 entries. The event takes place Nov. 9-22 at the Kentucky Fair and Exposition Center in Louisville, Ky.

Sureva Towler, Lawrence, is the grand-prize winner of The Coleman Company Inc.’s Centennial Story Contest. Her prize was a weeklong vacation in the Grand Teton area in Jackson Hole, Wyo., and a semitrailer full of camping gear.

Sureva’s contest entry was one of thousands received for the Coleman Centennial Story Contest in 2001. As part of Coleman’s 100-year birthday celebration, customers were invited to share their favorite experience with Coleman products.

Eric Spray, a student at Free State High School, received a full-tuition, room and board scholarship to attend The Marie Walsh Sharpe Art Foundation 2002 Summer Seminar Program. The program, which he attended June 23-July 6, is designed as an art institute offering an intensive art studio program for gifted high school juniors.
