Bobbleheads sent to minors

New collectible series depicts major leaguers when they were prospects

Last year, bobblehead dolls were major commodities in baseball stadiums and stores around the United States. This year, the concept has taken a step backward.

And with good reason.

Bobbleheads of major league players in their minor league threads are being sold through a promotion on MLB.com called “Road to the Show.” The concept was developed by Major League Baseball Properties the official licensing agent for Minor League Baseball.

Each of the 14 figures that will be available were produced by recognized bobblehead manufacturer Alexander Global Promotions of Washington. Each of the 14 dolls will represent one of the current leagues in minor league baseball.

Diamondbacks ace Randy Johnson is shown in his Jamestown Expos (New York Penn League) uniform.

One bobblehead will be shown each week in a full-page ad in USA Today Baseball Weekly and on MLB.com, with clues to the identity of the next week’s figure. Only 5,000 of each individually numbered bobblehead will be produced. The dolls will be available in the shop section at MLB.com for $24.99 each, plus shipping.

The entire set of 14 will be available for $299.99 plus shipping exclusively at minorleaguebaseball.com. If purchased as a set, all 14 dolls will have the same number.

Fans who purchase the set will receive bonus bobblehead dolls of 2001 Rookie of the Year winners Ichiro Suzuki and Albert Pujols. Both are shown in their major league uniforms and will have the same number as the other 14 dolls.

The promotion kicked off April 24 with the release of a Jason Giambi figure dressed in a Tacoma Tigers uniform.

“Minor League Baseball is excited about partnering with Major League Baseball Properties and Alexander Global Promotions to offer fans this unique ‘Road to the Show’ collection of bobblehead dolls,” said Mike Moore, president of Minor League Baseball. “Minor League Baseball continues to develop the future stars of the game in towns across America.”
