WNBA: Liberty cries uncle to Sam

? Sheri Sam scored 24 points, grabbed six rebounds and had three steals as the Miami Sol snapped the New York Liberty’s four-game winning streak with a 54-46 victory Tuesday night.

Sam, the only Miami player in double figures, scored over 20 points for the fourth time this year. Her 3-point shot with 2:02 remaining pushed Miami’s lead to 49-42, and the Liberty never challenged.

“Let’s face it, she carried us offensively,” Miami coach Ron Rothstein said. “We got her some good looks and she made some big shots. She also put the ball on the floor and took it to the basket … She’s our All-Star player and we need her.”

The Sol had lost two of three games, while New York entered having won six of seven.

Miami (11-12) made only 20 of 58 shots from the field (34.5 percent), while New York (14-10) converted just 16 of 50 shots (32 percent).

Sol point guard Debbie Black scored only two points on free throws, going 0-for-7 from the field, but she had eight rebounds, four assists and four steals. She fed Sam in perfect position for her late 3-pointer.

“I’m just thinking score, trying to be aggressive and make something happen,” Sam said.
