The Hadl reunion will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. July 14 in Building 21 at the Douglas County 4-H Fairgrounds, 2110 Harper St. Family members are asked to bring a meat dish, table service and salad or dessert. Drinks will be provided.

Two recent Kansas University graduates will study abroad next academic year with a scholarship from the Rotary Foundation.

Holly Hydeman, a May 2002 graduate in chemical engineering, and Christine Garton, who received degrees in business May 2001 and French and May 2002, will receive $25,000 each.

The foundation created the scholarships to promote friendly relations between countries.

Hydeman, who now works as a paralegal in Philadelphia, will work on a master’s degree in international affairs at a university in Paris. She is an Olathe native.

Garton, Lenexa, plans to study legal studies at Oxford University in England. She eventually wants to earn a degree in patent law.

Sean and Jody Buchanan, Eudora, announce the birth of their son, Stephan Andrew, born June 12, 2002, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital. He has two brothers, Thomas, 3, and Marcus, 21 months.

Grandparents are Albert and Carolyn Miller, Eudora, and Carolyn Buchanan, Lawrence, and the late Thomas Buchanan.

Stephan’s great-grandfather is John C. Miller, Rossville.

Colin Elwell and Sarah Frost, both of Lawrence, have been named to the Dean’s List for 2002 spring semester at the University of Iowa, Iowa City, Iowa, by earning at least a 3.25 grade point average.

Beth Schild, Baldwin, and Kasey Stadler, Tecumseh, are members of a Kansas State international team serving this summer in Latin America.

Schild is working in Punta Gorda, Belize, where her team is developing projects in conjunction with Toledo Community College. Team members also will be teaching math, science and English programs.

Stadler is serving in Izamal, Mexico, where her team will work with the Yucatan Cultural Foundation in its summer camp program for children.

Nicole Huseby and Lara Turner, both of Lawrence, were among the candidates competing June 28-30 for the title of Miss Teen of Kansas at the 2002 State Pageant in Wichita. Nicole is the daughter of Raymond and Diana Huseby, Lawrence. Lara is the daughter of Kenneth and Michelle Walton, Lawrence.

Carly Sakumura, daughter of Beth and Eric Sakumura, Lawrence, recently completed Level 3 of the Future Astronaut Training Program at the Kansas Cosmosphere and Space Center in Hutchinson. The week-long camp included a trip to Houston to tour NASA’s Johnson Space Center.

The 31st reunion of the descendants of Isadora and George Markley was June 9 at Carroll Wingert’s Shed with 83 present. Those who attended from the area:

Brian Tongier, a Kansas University graduate, has received his master’s degree in sociology from the University of California at Los Angeles.

Tongier will return to KU this fall to begin work on his doctorate in sociology. Tongier is a Jacob Javits fellowship winner, a Mortar Board and Golden Key Honor Society member and an active volunteer at Habitat for Humanity. He is the son of Randy and Jane Tongier, Lawrence.
