Shallenburger declared winner in GOP gubernatorial primary

State Treasurer Tim Shallenburger captured the Republican gubernatorial nomination Tuesday night, after his two challengers conceded to the conservative nominee.

With 74 percent of the precincts reporting statewide, Shallenburger had 42 percent of the vote, followed by Senate President Dave Kerr, of Hutchinson, with 31 percent.

Wichita Mayor Bob Knight had 25 percent and made a concession speech to supporters in Wichita just before 10 p.m. Kerr followed about a half-hour later in Topeka.

Kerr thanked his supporters, while Knight started his speech with a joke.

“I’ll tell you how smart I am,” Knight said. “I didn’t have a speech for losing. This is going to be a real test in humility.”

Shallenburger campaign manager Bob Murray said the numbers tracked with Shallenburger’s polling.
