Final approval sought to widen Sixth Street near Wakarusa Drive

Bottom Line

Lawrence city commissioners are expected to give final approval to an agreement with the Kansas Department of Transportation to widen Sixth Street between Wakarusa Drive and Kansas Highway 10.

Background

Plans call for KDOT taking bids on the project in 2004 and the work being completed by 2006. The project is expected to cost about $17 million, of which the city of Lawrence will put up $5 million. The rest  $12 million  will come from state funds. The street will be expanded to four lanes  it’s two lanes now  and install a median between Wakarusa Drive and Kansas Highway 10.

Adopt on first reading the following ordinances:

 Granting Phase II property tax abatement to Allen Press.

 Rezoning approximately 27.9 acres from agricultural to single-family residential district. The property is generally located east of Queens Road, approximately 2300 feet north of West Sixth Street.

 Rezoning approximately 13.4 acres from agricultural to duplex residential district. The property is generally located east of Queens Road, approximately 673 feet north of West Sixth Street.

 Rezoning approximately 12.3 acres from agricultural to planned residential district. The property is generally located east of Queens Road, approximately a quarter-mile north of West Sixth Street.

Adopt on second and final reading the following ordinances:

 Establishing approximately 50 feet of additional “no parking” along the west side of Sunset Drive, north of Cambridge Road.

 Establishing a 35 mph speed limit on Harper Street between 19th and 23rd streets.

Adopt the following resolutions:

 Ordering a public hearing on the advisability of improving Overland Drive from 340 feet west of Wakarusa Drive to Queens Road.

 Ordering a public hearing on the advisability of improving Congressional Drive from Sixth Street to Overland Drive.

 Accept dedication of easements and rights-of-way on the final plat for Heritage Baptist Church No. 2, a replat of Heritage Baptist Church Addition. This is a three-lot residential and proposed office subdivision located on the northeast corner of Sixth Street and Folks Road.
