Lawrence Police and Fire/Medical got an early start last night. Just after the football game wrapped up, Fire crews were called to the 2100 block of W 26th Street on reports of a structure fire. The caller advised there was smoke coming from a neighboring apartment. LPD arrived first and confirmed that there was smoke coming from one apartment. Police assisted in evacuating the rest of the building as fire crews arrived. Crews made entry into the apartment where the smoke was coming from, they were confronted with heavy smoke and no signs of heat. Upon further investigation they located a burner on the stove had been left on. The stove was turned off and the apartment was ventilated. No one was home in the apartment where the smoke originated and no injuries were reported.

Right around 12:30 a.m. KUPD found several large bushes on fire near the Mississippi Street parking garage. That officer requested Lawrence Fire to respond and attempted to extinguish the fire with an extinguisher. That attempt was unsuccessful. Fire crews arrived shortly after and were able to quickly extinguish the fire. Again, no injuries were reported and no vehicles damaged.

Just after that Fire call, LifeStar Medical Helicopter was returning to Lawrence Municipal from an inter-hospital patient transfer to a Kansas City area hospital. Just outside of Lawrence the Pilot advised his dispatcher that the aircraft had taken a bird strike, suffered no apparent damage. A few minutes later the helicopter landed normally at Lawrence Municipal and then went out of service for a time to allow the Pilot and crew to confirm that there was no damage to the aircraft. No one was injured and there was not a patient on board at the time.

Around 2:15 a.m. a County Deputy patrolling Eudora found a disturbance in front of an address in the 1100 block of Birch Street. No injuries were reported.

A short time later, about 2:30 a.m. Lawrence Police were called to the 1000 block of Ohio Street on reports of a subject who was getting into different parked vehicles. Numerous officers checked the area for that subject and made contact with pedestrians in the area. No one was located that matched the very vague description that was provided by the caller.

Police were called to the 2200 block of Harper Street to investigate reports of gunshots heard in the area around 3:20 a.m. Four officers responded to the area to investigate the report. Those officers witnessed “aerial fireworks” being fired just a short distance away.

Police made several suspected DUI arrests along with responding on the usual disturbances and noise complaints.
