The 2nd Battalion, 16th Infantry Regiment, based out of Fort Riley, Kan., was conducting targeted raids in the Kamaliyah neighborhood based on tips from residents in an attempt to root out insurgents and bring security to eastern Baghdad. “New Baghdad residents did the right thing and violence by a small minority will not speak for the majority of residents who want peace,” said Maj. Sean Ryan, a spokesperson for the 2nd IBCT. “Along with our partners, the Iraqi Security Forces, we will help the people any way we can.”(The Register-Mail) ‘Never going to stop missing you’: A solemn funeral Mass at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church on Monday morning sent Capt. Joshua E. Steele to his eternal rest. The early morning fog had burned off by 10 a.m. and the sky was blue. Members of the Patriot Guard Riders stood in front of the church, U.S. flags proudly displayed. “What a special and absolutely amazing person he was,” Steele’s older sister, Gina Steele, 38, of San Francisco, told family, friends and members of the military gathered inside the church. Steele, 26, the son of R. Philip and Paula Steele of North Henderson, was killed along with two other soldiers June 17 when an improvised explosive device detonated near their vehicle in Panjway, Afghanistan. Tod Bunting, Kansas adjutant general. “They have served their country well.”Etc.(AP) Kansas paratrooper dies from Iraq wounds: A paratrooper from south-central Kansas has died of wounds he suffered last week in Iraq. The Defense Department says 21-year-old Specialist Eric Palmer of Maize died Sunday at a military hospital in Germany. He was wounded last Thursday by small arms fire during an insurgent attack in Bayji. Palmer joined the Army September of 2004 and served with the 82nd Airborne Division. He was a member of the division’s the division’s 1st Battalion, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team. Survivors include his father, John Palmer, and his mother, Dena Palmer, both of Maize, and a brother, Travis Palmer, of Fort Leavenworth.
