Joshua Walton was worried after he heard someone had been hit by a car on Kentucky Street during the early morning of Sept. 23, his roommate said during testimony in Douglas County District Court Friday.”It looks bad,” James Andrade quoted Walton as saying.Walton, 24, is charged with involuntary manslaughter in the hit-and-run death of Ryan M. Kanost, 22. Kanost was struck as he tried to cross Kentucky Street at 13th Street. Witnesses who testified during a preliminary hearing for Walton said he had been drinking the night of the accident.Andrade said Walton was brought to their Lawrence residence by a girlfriend. The car, a Toyota Camry, was parked downtown on Massachusetts Street when Andrade later went to examine it to see if it could be driven home. The front passenger side of the car was dented and something had been pushed against a wheel, making it undrivable, Andrade said. It also was leaking fluid.Andrade said he also noticed a small red blot on the car and touched it with his finger, thinking it might be grease.Walton said he was driving on Kentucky, struck something with his car but didn’t see anything, Andrade said.Walton turned himself into Lawrence Police hours after the wreck. After questioning he was released. He was arrested after being charged in December. He is now free on $25,000 bond.Judge Robert Fairchild continued Friday’s hearing to 1:30 p.m. Aug. 3. Walton’s attorney, Tom Bath, had an afternoon court hearing in another county. The purpose of a preliminary hearing is for the judge to determine if there is enough evidence for Walton to be tried.Bath told Fairchild he intends to file a motion to suppress Walton’s recorded interview with police.- Contributed by Mike Belt
