Man identified in Franklin County accident

Law enforcement report¢ A man killed in an accident near Ottawa around 6 a.m. Sunday has been identified. Michael J. Kiefer, 36, of rural Pomona, was northbound on Idaho Road when his 2002 Chevrolet pickup truck struck a hole on the flood-damaged roadway, which was closed. Idaho Road is five miles west of Ottawa on Kansas Highway 68.According to a Franklin County Sheriff’s Office release, Kiefer had apparently driven around the road’s barricades. When the truck struck the first hole, the front tire blew out, causing Kiefer to lose control and skid off the west side of the road. The truck then rolled several times before coming to rest on its wheels in a nearby field.Kiefer, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was thrown from the vehicle.Burglaries and thefts reported¢ A 2006 Honda Odyssey van, valued at $20,000 was stolen from a 68-year-old Lawrence man between 8 p.m. Thursday and 9:57 a.m. Friday. The vehicle and $100 in cash were stolen from the 1500 block of Inverness Drive.¢ The Bank of America branch, 900 Ohio, reported $1,500 in damage to three windows Saturday. The incident occurred between 6:05 p.m. Friday and 7:45 a.m. Saturday. ¢ A 1995 blue Dodge Dakota pickup truck, valued at $5,000 was reported stolen from the 2500 block of Cedarwood Avenue.
