Malik Newman breaks down K-State’s last shot, late-game strategy

Malik Newman figured K-State, trailing by one, might try to drive on its final possession. But the KU guard was well prepped for what ended up transpiring.

“The exact same play that they were trying to run (last year),” Newman said of K-State’s last shot in the 73-72 KU win. “We had already scouted it. We knew that it was coming.”

Newman, who hit the go-ahead free throws with 15 seconds remaining, defended Barry Brown on the last shot and forced a missed 3-pointer. The Jayhawks came away with the win to improve to 4-1 in Big 12 play.

“We knew make or miss we had to get a stop either way,” Newman said. “I think we did a great job.”
