Moby makes me feel young and nostalgic

A few weeks ago, several 25-35 year-olds in Kansas huddled around their inboxes and could not believe their eyes. Normally us jaded concert-goers would ignore e-mails from ticketmaster, but this one was special. It promoted an exclusive Moby DJ set in Kansas City.

A celebration dance was in order.

I had already seen Moby twice before, but this was going to be different. Instead of touring with a large band and performing his own music, he busted out a little something for the ravers.

I spent the evening prior to the show trying to figure out what on earth I was going to wear. Do I bust out the oldskool raver pants and candy necklaces? No, I was beyond that. I decided to play it safe with a hoodie and jeans. Later on, when chatting with other fans at the show, I would come to learn they had experienced the same indecisiveness. Do we bust out the old raver wardrobes? No, let’s play it safe with jeans and a jacket.

Speaking of the fans, look how awesome they are.

Awesome awesome AWESOME!! There were so many great things about this show, but I think the best part was the fact that this was an older, more mature crowd, kicking it back to the old days. The camaraderie was astounding. From the very moment we waited in line and throughout the entire show, everyone was a buddy. Everyone chatted with each other, made snarky sarcastic comments with each other, and boogied with each other.

And trust me, the snarkiness was in high gear, and here’s why. Moby’s DJ set was at the Beaumont Club. His set started at 11:30 (way past the bedtime for 25-35 year-olds hahaha). Why did it start at 11:30? Because, get this, HANSON was playing beforehand. Yes, I’m talking about mmm-bop Hanson (although in all fairness, I believe they’re attempting to change their image quite dramatically). So when all the older, jaded Moby fans arrived to line up at the club, we were greeted by a line of giddy teenagers (their fan base is STILL teenagers!) lined up by the tour bus, cameras in hand. You can imagine the jokes and harassment that followed. All in good fun, of course.

But enough Hanson talk, back to Moby.

As previously mentioned, I’ve seen Moby two times before (both in KC, each time at a different venue). But every time I see him, he brings something new to the table, and makes sure it’s out-of-this-world fun for everyone. The first time I saw him (2002), he had an astounding chorus of backup singers. The second time (2005), he really connected with the audience, conversing with them the entire time, sometimes playing old punk favorites (he used to play in a punk band), and managed to play old raver-techno-ish songs using REAL instruments (guitars, bongos, etc.). And of course, this most recent time stood out because it was a DJ set.

And what a set it was. That man rocked it the whole night.

Needless to say I was a very happy Fally by the end of the night. The night before, I attended a Girl Talk concert, and felt so out of place. But with Moby, I finally felt like I belonged. When the show was over the giddy 25-35 year-olds trotted home, ecstatic that they managed to make it up way past their bedtime (hahaha) and dance the whole night (I even saw another prego like myself dancing).

But what pleases Fally more than anything else? Hula girls. Check it out!
