KU ranks among top 10 schools for veterans on Military Times list

Thanks to KU’s Office of Graduate Military Programs for this tip: KU ranked No. 9 among U.S. four-year colleges on a list of the best schools for military veterans put together by the Military Times last month.

Eastern Kentucky University took first place on the “Best for Vets” list. KU was seventh among public schools, third-highest among schools with 20,000 students or more, and it was highest-ranked in the Big 12 (West Virginia University was next, coming in at 18 on the four-year-schools list).

Military Times ranked the schools based on a number of factors. Things that appeared to play in KU’s favor included participation in the federal Yellow Ribbon program, in which schools help pay for vets’ tuition above what’s provided by the post-9/11 GI Bill; relaxed residency requirements for service members; the presence of an office devoted to veterans and a strong veterans-services staff; and a low student-loan default rate compared with other schools on the list.
