Summer theater experiences unique to Lawrence and its natives seem to be on the rise.In its July newsletter, Kansas Audio-Reader Network staffer Peggy Sampson announced that she and Audio Reader volunteer coordinator Betty Laird would appear on stage in an original play by local author Betty Laird.The play, called “Song on the Wind,” is the story of the first woman professor at Kansas University. The play will be performed at 8 p.m. Aug. 8 and 9 and at 2:30 p.m. Aug. 10 at Lawrence Community Theatre.KU’s theater and film department also recently announced its Kansas Summer Theater would host the world premier of “The Girl, the Grouch, and the Goat: A Modern Fable.”According to the press release, the play is written by playwright/journalist/teacher Jack Helbig and lyrics and music are by composer/lyricist Mark Hollman who won a 2002 Tony Award for “Urinetown the Musical.KU faculty member John Staniunas, associate professor and chair of theater and film, will direct.The play focuses on the fable “Dyskolos,” the Greek word for grouch.”The Girl, the Grouch, and the Goat,” will be staged at 7:30 p.m. July 15 through 19 and at 2:30 p.m. July 20 in the Crafton-Preyer Theatre.
