Two separate gun-related crimes reported overnight in Lawrence

Lawrence police responded to more than one situation overnight where suspects were accused of threatening others with guns.

About 7:15 p.m. Monday, officers went to a reported disturbance with weapons in the 3300 block of Iowa Street, Officer Derrick Smith said in email. He said there was a disagreement involving “a number of individuals” outside a mobile home and that the suspect allegedly pointed a pistol at another person during the argument. Smith said the suspect was arrested on suspicion of aggravated assault.

Tuesday afternoon, Jermel Fleming, 25, of Grandview, Mo., was charged in Douglas County District Court with one count of aggravated assault with a firearm, a felony. Fleming has past convictions including aggravated robbery, aggravated burglary and kidnapping stemming from a 2010 incident in Lawrence’s Oread neighborhood, according to Kansas Department of Corrections records and past Journal-World reports.

In another incident, about 5 a.m. Tuesday, police were dispatched to a reported armed robbery in the 1400 block of Apple Lane. Smith said the victim told police that a friend and an unknown guest had come to the victim’s home, and the guest displayed a handgun and stole several items from the victim.

Smith said the friend and suspect left before officers got there, and no arrests were made. No one was hurt, he said.
