Downtown Lawrence vehicle burglaries lead to the arrest of a Gardner man

Reports of several vehicle burglaries downtown on Tuesday evening led to the arrest of a Gardner man later that night, police said.

At 7:46 p.m. officers were dispatched to the 700 block of Vermont Street regarding several auto burglaries in the area, said Lawrence Police Sgt. Laurie Powell.

Shortly afterward officers found Braden Lance Schmidt, 24, in the area, Powell said, adding that Schmidt matched a description given to police.

Officers attempted to make contact with Schmidt, but he ran, Powell said. After a foot chase, police arrested Schmidt on suspicion of attempted burglary, two counts of theft, interference with a law enforcement officer, possession of certain depressants, and burglary.

According to Douglas County Jail booking logs, Schmidt was arrested in the 800 block of Pennsylvania Street.

Lawrence Police Department activity logs note that a total of 13 officers responded to the scene.

Schmidt was booked into the Douglas County Jail and held without bond.

Powell said no injuries were reported from the incident, no items were stolen and no vehicles were damaged.

When asked why a burglary charge was filed against Schmidt when nothing was reported stolen, Powell said the count was related to a separate incident earlier on Tuesday but would not comment on the case, which is now pending in Douglas County District Court.

An incident number Powell provided on the earlier incident involving Schmidt matches a police incident log report of a vehicle theft at 3:15 p.m. Tuesday in the 1000 block of Pennsylvania Street.
