Busy Tuesday on a stretch of East 23rd Street

Tuesday seemed to be a busy time for a portion of 23rd Street, with several incidents resulting in a couple of arrests and one person being sent to the hospital.

Shortly before 4 p.m., Kevin Mendham, 40, of Lawrence, was arrested in the 1800 block of East 23rd Street, according to Douglas County Jail booking logs.

Earlier that afternoon, Douglas County sheriff’s deputies spotted Mendham and recognized that he had several warrants out for his arrest, said Douglas County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Kristen Dymacek.

Mendham’s warrants were related to missed court appearances, Dymacek said.

In an attempt to avoid arrest, Mendham ran from the deputies, Dymacek said. He was caught and arrested “after an extremely short foot pursuit.”

Mendham was booked into the Douglas County Jail on suspicion of felony obstruction and four counts of failure to appear.

Not long after Mendham was arrested Lawrence Police arrested another man with warrants out for his arrest.

Billy Wayne Carter, 41, of Lawrence, was arrested in the 1600 block of East 23rd Street around 4:21 p.m., connected to warrants out of Linn County, Kansas, according to Douglas County Jail booking logs.

The Linn County warrants were issued on suspicion of forgery, attempted theft and a municipal court violation.

Much later in the evening and a few blocks up the road, officers were dispatched to a larger situation.

At 11:24 p.m., six officers responded to the 1000 block of East 23rd Street for a fight with weapons, according to Lawrence Police Department activity logs.

Lawrence Police Sgt. Amy Rhoads said the officers arrived at a gas station and found four men fighting with another man.

The four men left the scene in a white vehicle, while the other man was taken to the hospital, Rhoads said. Further information was not available regarding the man’s injuries or whether police were able to identify the other men involved.
