Man allegedly attempts to ditch $137 bar tab; two accused of swimming in underwear at city pool; Lawrence girl reported missing

Kryztal Friday

Somebody may have had too much fun at the Sandbar’s block party this weekend.

Just before 1 a.m. Saturday, Sandbar employees called police after a patron allegedly fled the bar after failing to pay his $137 bar tab, Lawrence police Sgt. Trent McKinley told me Monday.

Employees and others chased the man to Eighth and Massachusetts streets, where they stopped him and got him to return to pay for his drinks, McKinley said. But after he did so, he tried to run off again but was “immediately captured,” McKinley said.

The man then allegedly decided that he would actually try to pay the tab. He offered the bar three different credit cards to do so, but all were declined. That’s when – you guessed it – he tried to run again.

He made it again to Eighth and Massachusetts streets, but was caught and turned over to police, McKinley said. He was arrested on an unrelated outstanding warrant and police issued him a notice to appear in court on suspicion of theft.

Two people apparently decided to take a nearly naked private plunge in the public pool early Friday morning. Around 4:50 a.m., a lifeguard arrived for work and found two “very intoxicated individuals” swimming in their scanties at the city pool, 727 Kentucky St., McKinley said. The lifeguard called dispatch, and officers responded, issuing the two swimmers notices to appear in court on suspicion of trespassing.

A man who said he accidentally dialed 911 ended up getting arrested after one thing led to another with the Lawrence police Thursday afternoon.

Around 4:30 p.m. Thursday, officers were sent to the area of 1908 E. 19th St. after someone called 911 and said it was an accident, McKinley said. A lot of times, officers will respond to make sure everything is OK when this or a 911 hang-up happens.

So dispatchers asked the man where he was calling from, and the man allegedly gave a different location than what the dispatchers were seeing on their 911 screens, McKinley said. When that happened, dispatchers went ahead and sent out the officers.

Once they arrived, police contacted a man “who was evasive in answering the officers’ questions and claimed to have no identification,” McKinley said. When officers questioned the man further, they began to suspect the man was not the person he was claiming to be.

Officers eventually determined the man’s real identity, and ultimately arrested him on suspicion of interference with the duties of a police officer, McKinley said. Police were unable to figure out why 911 was dialed from the man’s phone.

A 16-year-old Lawrence girl reported as a runaway July 22 has been added to the National Crime Information Center as a missing child, McKinley said Friday. The girl, Kryztal Friday, allegedly ran away from her placement at The Shelter Inc., McKinley said.

Kryztal was last seen with bleached blond hair. Below is a screenshot from her missing poster at http://www.missingkids.com/poster/NCMC/1252202/1.

If you see her or have any information about her whereabouts, please call 911 or the Lawrence Police Department at (785) 832-7509.

A resident in an apartment complex in the 4600 block of West Sixth Street Friday evening called police on an allegedly drunken neighbor causing a ruckus around dinner time. The caller claimed the man was “intoxicated and was yelling rude, vulgar language at people in the complex, and creating a noise disturbance both inside and outside of his apartment,” McKinley said. Officers responded, found the man, and gave him a notice to appear in court on suspicion of disturbing the peace.

Crime Stoppers of Lawrence and Douglas County are offering DNA test kits for $1 “to help ensure your child’s or loved one’s safety,” the group posted on its Facebook page. They say it’s “more effective and easier than fingerprinting” if someone goes missing.

The “kits” consist of a sterile swab and envelope. The idea is to swab a person’s cheek, then keep the swab enclosed in the envelope in the freezer.

These DNA kits help ensure your child's (or loved one's) safety, and we are pleased to now offer them for only $1.00…
