Area football roundup: Perry-Lecompton dominates Royal Valley

Perry-Lecompton dominated in its season opener at Royal Valley. The Wildcats scored early with a 16-yard touchdown run from Baine Pattin just over four minutes into the game and never looked back, shutting out Royal Valley with a 68-0 victory.

The Kaws, who had 363 rushing yards, had three players make a significant impact on the field. Leading the way was Dalton Kellum with 166 yards on 12 carries with four touchdowns. Shane Quinlan and Pattin both contributed over 60 yards rushing on the night.

Perry-Lecompton (1-0) will play host to Holton at 7 p.m. Friday.

Baldwin 35, Ottawa 7

The Baldwin football team took advantage of two turnovers in the first half and entered the locker room with a 14-0 advantage. The Bulldogs held their own throughout the second half as they went on to win 35-7.

Basehor-Linwood 42, Tonganoxie 6

Tonganoxie fell in its season opener at Basehor-Linwood. The Bobcats took a 21-0 lead on three touchdowns in the first quarter en route to a 42-6 victory over the Chieftains.

Tonganoxie, which went 9-0 in the regular season in 2017, scored a late touchdown in the fourth quarter to prevent the shutout. It marked Tonganoxie’s first loss in the regular season since Oct. 27, 2016, which also came courtesy of Basehor-Linwood in a 27-12 defeat.

The Chieftains (0-1) will play host to Louisburg at 7 p.m. Friday.

Piper 28, Eudora 7

First-year head coach Sean Hayden wasn’t able to start things off with a win. Eudora dropped a 28-7 decision at Piper to begin the 2018 season.

Answering an early touchdown by LeJames White, senior quarterback Gavin Elston’s touchdown proved to be the only scoring effort for the Cardinals. Senior Carter Neis rushed for over 100 yards, finishing the game with 103 yards on 20 carries. Eudora finished with 245 yards of offense.

Eudora (0-1) will play host to Bonner Springs at 7 p.m. Friday.

Veritas fell 49-0 on the road at Wichita HomeSchool. Down 27 points at the half, WAHAA scored 22 more in the third quarter.
