Area roundup: Tonganoxie rallies past Chanute to extend win streak

Tonganoxie scored 23 points in the third quarter to surge past Chanute, 48-36, in the first round of the Class 4A playoffs.

After trailing 21-19 at the intermission, the Chieftains (7-2) scored a trio of touchdowns and added a two-point conversion to pull away in the third period. Quarterback Hayden Robbins connected with receiver Elijah Tyner for a pair of scores in the first half, while senior running back Korbin Riedel tacked on two rushing touchdowns in the third quarter.

Tonganoxie, which has won seven games in a row, travels to face Paola (8-1) at 7 p.m. Friday.

Perry-Lecompton 34, Wamego 20

Perry-Lecompton used a 20-point first quarter to down Wamego, 34-20, in the opening round of the Class 3A playoffs.

Senior Dalton Kellum scored two touchdowns in the opening period, finishing with 193 rushing yards on 35 carries. William Welch connected with Colton Mallonee for an 80-yard touchdown in the pass in the first quarter.

Perry-Lecompton (7-2) will travel to defending 3A state champion Sabetha (9-0) at 7 p.m. Friday.

Basehor-Linwood 44, Eudora 16

Eudora found some, but just not enough success on offense as it concluded its season with a 44-16 loss at Basehor-Linwood. The Bobcats jumped out to a 14-0 first quarter lead, extending their lead to 21 with 5:52 to go in the second quarter.

The Cardinals (1-8) scored twice to close the gap to just eight points at half, but just couldn’t continue their success. Carter Neis had a 19-yard touchdown carry and Gavin Elston caught a 16-yard pass from Ezekiel Reazin. On both plays, the Cardinals converted the two-point try via the run. Basehor-Linwood blocked a kick to draw a safety with 1:51 remaining in the third, and put up 14 more points to close out the win.

Paola 45, Baldwin 6

Baldwin fell in the first round with a 45-6 loss at No. 3 Paola. The Bulldogs finished their season with a 2-7 record.

The Bulldogs were shut out through three quarters of play by a 45-0 margin. When they got on the board with 8:10 to go in the fourth quarter, Paola blocked the extra point.
