Who would you rather have win the NCAA title now: K-State or Northern Iowa?
Asked at Royal Crest Lanes, 933 Iowa on March 23, 2010
“Northern Iowa because I hate K-State.”
“Probably Northern Iowa because I know some K-State people and they wouldn’t let KU fans live it down after we beat them three times and then couldn’t win the Big Dance.”
“K-State because they’re Big 12.”
“K-State. I grew up in Manhattan and I went to K-State.”

Northern Iowa because maybe it wouldn't look so bad that we lost to them. We don't have anything to prove to K-state since we beat them 3 times this season.

Northern Iowa doesn't have a realistic chance. I love the irony of the possible K-State championship. I'm not a fan, but wish them well. Now if Mizzou were still playing...

Tough call. I think if you're going to spread joy, bequeath it on anyone but the usual suspects (Kensucky or the University of New Jersey, the Dukies). They'll talk about it to the end of their days. Best bang for the losing buck. UNI, then (tie) Baylor or K-State, as I admire their coaches handling adversity from the bottom up.

Michigan State. Duh. (smile) But with Lucas out with a ruptured achilles, and others playing injured, it would take a miracle. I hope they at least pull through one more round and knock off Iowa State.
If MSU loses, I won't really care much. If K-State won, I'd be happy for my K-State friends; if Baylor won, I'd be happy for a niece who's a student there. It's sports, folks, not life & death.

I think a better question is "How many KU fans will still watch the tournament?". I don't care if your team is out already...if you don't watch the NCAA tournament, you are NOT a basketball fan.

Baylor, followed by K-State, followed by Cornell. Those would be my top three choices, in order. UNI was a fluke. They had the game of their life, and KU had the worst game of their season. It happens.

I'm rooting for K-State. Why not? Support the Big 12 and a team from the state of Kansas. K-State reminds me of Michigan State last year, with two very good guards and athletic bigs. Also, let's face it, there are no teams in the tourney like last year's UNC, so K-State has a legit chance.
jbiegs 3 years, 1 month ago
motomom, KU fans are hilarious...You must've been one of the fans at a football game in late October saying "Well its basketball season now anyway" LOL I love how quickly the seasons change with all you fair weather fans!
rando1965 3 years, 1 month ago
k-state and kentucky should be a great game
Ricky_Vaughn 3 years, 1 month ago
I don't get why ALL the KU fans aren't rooting for KSU. Anything K-State achieves only adds legitimacy to the Big 12 and, in turn, adds legitimacy to KU. It means a lot more when KU wins the Big 12 while there are other top 10 teams in the same conference.
gccs14r 3 years, 1 month ago
I think a final four of Cornell, St. Mary's, Northern Iowa, and Butler would be fantastic. Maybe the NCAA selection committee would start paying better attention to the actual basketball being played, instead of the names on the uniforms.
AreUNorml 3 years, 1 month ago
is there some sort of tournament or something going on?
jonas_opines 3 years, 1 month ago
"I don't get why ALL the KU fans aren't rooting for KSU."
Because everything that you said holds true the same for Baylor, and they're not our rival, and I haven't had to listen to their fans crow for the last few days.
The same reason, I imagine, why I wouldn't hold it against KSU fans for not rooting for us, had our positions been reversed.
riverdrifter 3 years, 1 month ago
I'll watch the championship game but that's it. With KU out my GAS switch is locked in the 'off' position. I'm making a quick trip to watch the ponies run at Hot Springs this weekend instead. I waited all winter for March and now it can't be gone soon enough!
Mel Briscoe 3 years, 1 month ago
" I haven't had to listen to their fans crow for the last few days. "
i know, right? i had to set one of them straight... first of all, everytime WE win, we don't go around acting like we are the proverbial all that and a bag of doritos. we do not storm the court; we do not tear down the goal post and parade it thru the streets. that's how they do it in manhattan and the mindset of alot of wildcat fans outside of riley county as well. they get on my nerves.
Ceallach 3 years, 1 month ago
K-State, that will please some of the misguided members of my family. I can't honestly say Big 12 all the way because if MU had won . . .

KU only plays Baylor once per year, not twice like KSU. KSU being good means more to KU.

Like to dish it out, but can't take it? I'm sure having Bramlage called Allen Fieldhouse West gets on their nerves too.
Mel Briscoe 3 years, 1 month ago
listen, ricky, i live in salina and am a little closer in proximity to manhattan and thus, have to put up w/ alot more k-state shennanigans, posing and posturing than you guys do in and around larryville. i've grown up seeing these purple freaks go bat-sh*t crazy every damn time one of their teams wins. hell, they couldn't even find a decent football coach so they had to go dig up the only coach that ever got them any recognition. they are poor losers as well as poor winners. that's how they roll. i've seen it up close and personal one too many times.
@ py, thanks! :)

I will be cheering for Wildcats but it won't be KSU. It will be the Awesome Kentucky Wildcats. Since the KS Jayhawks are out, I will cheer for the next best team on the court. We have a friendly rivalry in our house. I am KS Jayhawk fan, my daughter is TX Longhorns all the way, my husband is from KY & is a big Wildcat fan. we have fun all year long with this. whoever wins deserves it.
Mel Briscoe 3 years, 1 month ago
i wouldn't mind if kentucky won. if not KU, why not UK? works for me.
gogoplata 3 years, 1 month ago
I'm not a basketball fan. I'm a KU fan so I could care less. I'd like to see GSP beat the crap out of Dan Hardy this weekend.
betti81 3 years, 1 month ago
seriously. what kind of question is this? neither. Go Wall and UK. Seriously wanted to KU play them, but alas the chips did not fall that way. I do not get the concept of cheering for your in-state rivals just because your team lost. Not going to happen. good luck to k-state and I hope the fans and alums enjoy the rest of March. I am fine with them seeing what it's like to live the life of tradition, excellence, and championship once in a blue moon. I mean even red-headed stepchildren should get some love every once in awhile. It just won't be from me :)
coolmarv 3 years, 1 month ago
A life long KU b-ball fan I find myself indifferent when it comes to KSU. KU has pretty much 'owned' the wildcats for the past 22 years and thus has made it hard for me to catch the rivalry spirit. I would rather KSU win then UNI. At least KSU is in the Big 12 and outside of never wanting Mizzou to win I usually root for the Big 12. UNI's win was a fluke although they played a great game. Evidently fluke happens.
Ricky_Vaughn 3 years, 1 month ago
Fair enough, Mel. Just don't act like KU fans never do any of that stuff...I remember when KU Football was coming up (Remember when KU was a doormat in football?), there were incidents of students tearing down the goal posts and throwing them into Potter's Puddle.
Pywacket 3 years, 1 month ago
As an aside.....
If "you" (name withheld out of kindness) could care less, then you apparently care somewhat. I believe the phrase you're looking for is "I couldn't care less."
Carry on. ;-)

By all means, Jonas...
Mel Briscoe 3 years, 1 month ago
ricky, i remember when both KU and KSU were doormats in the football category. this was in the late 80s, i was a student at KU, and they both sucked butt. and i remember KSU coming to lawrence for a game and spray painting the big jayhawk on campus.
Ricky_Vaughn 3 years, 1 month ago
Look, even if you watched 15 guys spray paint the Jayhawk, it doesn't mean that all KSU fans are jackasses and vandals.
I got robbed by an African American once...is it fair for me to say that they're all thieves? We both know the answer to that...

oh god, ricky, PLEASE don't go there!! not in this forum-- that is gas to the fire! (and an unnecessary comparison for a light topic like sports)

bkreed1960 3 years, 1 month ago
jbiegs, 63 of the 65 teams will say the same thing I did about wanting the team that beat them to win or pretty close to it by thinking that thought. It was an amazing year until Saturday night. Unfortunately, 49 teams are going to be watching from the comfort of their home with 12 more teams joining them after this weekend. These things happen and at least I have the KU 2008, 1988, and 1952 National Championships to keep me going forever and a day as well as all those Final Fours and 2,003 overall victories, etc. Enjoy your team's run through the tournament because you never know when it could end. It could be as soon as Thursday night or not. That's why this tournament is so fun because the Cinderellas as well as all the other teams can dream BIG.

mjhawk75 3 years, 1 month ago
I would like to say that I would root for the other school in the state except for when I saw K-State fans rooting against KU in OKC and the K-State band cheering against KU...I just don't think they deserve my support! I think the ultimate match up to see who really had it in them would have been the KU and K-State Final Four, but things don't always pan out. I'll be a Jayhawk forever no matter what happens.
Side note...I think its funny that many people said they would never root for Missouri what does that say about those fans??

From your post, it is reasonable to infer that you believe that members of Quantrill's raiding party are still alive. And people wonder why I mock basketball fans?

Syracuse. Jim Boeheim is a class act, he's been coaching there forever, and I wouldn't mind seeing the Orange beat Duke or Kentucky in the final.

I'm still upset about our loss and prolly will be until next season. I can't wait to checkout the new recruits and see what the red shirts have in store for us. I say K-State would bring the money home to the Big 12 but if NIU wins it(slim chance I know), we can say we only get beat by the best. At this point, I'm just enjoying the pressure-free games.

I will cheer for them just like they cheered for us in OKC.
At least for a change they will be bringing money to the big 12 instead of taking all of it the rest of us win.
But cheer for them? I was going to as a loyal Kansan but they are such poor nasty sports that I doubt I do. Sad isn't it.

K-State!!! Nice win. This team and their coach showed the confidence and calmness that KU lacked in their humiliating defeat. Even with Xavier lauching 35 footers over and over and over again, K-state did not flinch. KState took care of business and never even blinked. This was not the Kstate team KU has beat three times. Good luck against Butler and the Final Four!
