As Secretary of State Kris Kobach was locked in a battle with Gov. Jeff Colyer for the GOP nomination for Kansas governor, Kobach failed to win his home county, unofficial results show.

Kobach, who lives in rural Douglas County near Lecompton, got beat badly by Colyer in Douglas County voting, according to unofficial totals from the Douglas County Clerk’s office. Results show Kobach lost by more than 1,700 votes, or a little more than 20 percentage points. Here’s a look at the Douglas County vote totals for Republican gubernatorial candidates.

• Jeff Colyer: 4,294 votes (51.3 percent)

• Kris Kobach: 2,505 votes (29.9 percent)

• Jim Barnett: 981 votes (11.7 percent)

• Ken Selzer: 438 votes (5.2 percent)

• Patrick “PK” Kucera: 69 votes ( 0.8 percent)

• Tyler Ruzich: 53 votes (0.6 percent)

• Joseph Tutera, Jr.: 26 votes (0.3 percent)

Kobach has been a Douglas County resident since 2017, when he changed his address from a Piper residence. Kobach has had property in the county, however, since at least 2014. In that year he was cited for not having received all the necessary building permits for a rural structure that he and his family would occasionally stay in. Ultimately, Kobach received the necessary permits from the county, and he reportedly went on to build a larger house on his rural Lecompton farm.

On the Democratic side of the ballot, Douglas County voters rallied behind state Rep. Laura Kelly, the eventual Democratic primary winner. Kelly won Douglas County by more than 5,000 votes or more than 40 percentage points. Here’s a look at the totals for the Democratic gubernatorial candidates:

• Laura Kelly: 7.094 votes (61.6 percent)

• Carl Brewer: 2,082 votes ( 18.1 percent)

• Joshua Svaty: 1,712 votes ( 14.8 percent)

• Arden Anderson: 381 votes (3.3 percent)

• Jack Bergeson: 234 votes (2.0 percent)
