A brief spell of warmer weather in Lawrence will give way to freezing temperatures and snow, just in time for the weekend.

The National Weather Service in Topeka has issued a winter weather advisory for Douglas County from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday.

Thursday’s high temperatures in the 50s will drop to lows in the teens by overnight, and wind gusts up to 30 miles per hour are possible after midnight, the weather service said.

Friday will see snow return to the area — “heavy at times in the morning” — and 4 to 6 inches may accumulate, the weather service said. Temperatures will stay cold, hovering around 20 degrees during the day before dropping to the low teens overnight into Saturday.

More snow and light freezing drizzle may fall Saturday, with the best chances in the afternoon and evening. Saturday’s highs should be in the upper 20s, and temperatures should reach around 30 degrees on Sunday, with mostly cloudy conditions. Monday and Tuesday may bring slight chances for snow, with highs in the mid to upper 20s, the weather service said.
