Lawrence residents will need to bundle up to start the new year on Tuesday, said Audra Hennecke, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Topeka.

The temperature in the Lawrence area was expected to drop into the teens early Tuesday morning, with a wind chill in the low single digits, when many people were celebrating, she said. The rest of New Year’s Day is expected to be mostly cloudy with high temperatures in the low 20s.

“It’s going to be a cold start to the new year,” she said.

The Lawrence area had received about 0.64 inches of rain as of 3:30 p.m. Monday. Hennecke said rain was expected to return for a couple hours Monday evening, possibly as freezing drizzle. With the cold temperatures on Tuesday, it’s possible the streets could be icy.

“We’re not anticipating any accumulation, however a light glaze would be possible,” Hennecke said Monday. “The concerns with that would be slick spots on roads, with primary concerns being bridges and overpasses.”

Overall, the area had received about 29.3 inches of precipitation — including rain and melted snow — for the year as of 3:30 p.m. Monday.

The area usually receives about 38.5 inches of precipitation annually, putting it behind normal precipitation by almost 10 inches, Hennecke said.
