Organizations to host community conversations about race in Lawrence

Two organizations plan to host a series of community conversations about race over the next several months, with the first scheduled for Saturday.

The organizations, Kansas Appleseed and Communities Creating Opportunity, will have the talks at the Lawrence Public Library, 707 Vermont St. The public is encouraged to attend.

The meeting dates and topics:

Saturday, 10 a.m. to noon

The topic: Implicit Bias: Understanding how racial attitudes and stereotypes affect actions and decision-making.

Saturday, Sept. 15, 1 p.m.-3 p.m.

The topic: Race and Place: Understanding the policies and practices that foster segregated communities and work spaces and how they can be changed.

Saturday, Oct. 27, 10 a.m. to noon

The topic: Race and the Economy: Wealth is highly concentrated in the U.S. economy. What causes this concentration and how can we create shared access to opportunity?

Saturday, Nov. 17, 10 a.m. to noon

The topic: Action Plan for Racial Justice: The most pressing issues affecting Lawrence and development of a shared agenda for racial justice.
