Informational meeting scheduled for grants to preserve Douglas County history, nature

Those interested in the preservation of historical and natural areas in Douglas County are invited to learn more about the county’s annual Natural and Cultural Grant Program at two informational meetings in January.

The meetings will be from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 4, at Meeting Room C in the Lawrence Public Library, 707 Vermont St., and from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 22, at Meeting Room B in the library.

Projects that will be considered for grant funding include the preservation of prairies, woodlands, waterways, other natural habitats, historical structures and sites that tell the story of Douglas County’s early history such as its settlement and links to the Civil War.

Applicants must meet with Heritage Conservation Council Program Coordinator Jan Shupert-Arick before Feb. 26 to be considered. To contact Shupert-Arick, call 785-330-2878 or email JShupertArick@douglascountyks.org.

More information about the program and past grant recipients can be found on the county’s website, douglascountyks.org.
