Meet the 2018 female Athlete of the Year finalists

Claire Campbell, Free State

A part of two state championship and state-record relays in 2015, Campbell has continued to dominate throughout her senior season. Signed to swim at the University of Kansas, with her dad as head coach, Campbell has proven herself one of the state’s best swimmers in the 200-yard freestyle and 500-yard freestyle.

Rachel Hickman, Free State

Hickman received all-state honors in her junior volleyball season, rewriting the school’s record books with 419 kills on a .334 hit percentage. The 6-foot-3 Hickman, a powerful left-hander who helped her team to a 27-15 record, already owns the program’s record for career kills. She’s committed to play in college at Kansas.

Kayla Kurtz, Baldwin

Among the state’s leaders in the javelin, Kurtz placed fourth at the Kansas Relays with a throw of 139 feet, 4 inches. The junior won a Class 4A state title in the event last year. During the basketball season, leading the Bulldogs to a state championship, Kurtz was a first-team all-Frontier League selection after averaging 12.7 points and 2.4 steals.

Evann Seratte, Lawrence

One of the top runners across the state, Seratte ranked in the top five of the 400-meter dash and 800-meter run midway through the track season. The junior was fourth at the Class 6A state meet in the 400 last year. Competing in cross country for the first time last fall, Seratte was 14th at her regional and 76th at the state meet.

E’Lease Stafford, Lawrence

Signed to play at East Tennessee State, Stafford earned all-state honors in her senior basketball season. The 5-foot-11 wing averaged 15.7 points, 6.8 rebounds and 2.8 assists, leading the Lions to a 17-5 record. In her four-year varsity career, Stafford scored more than 1,000 points and was named first-team all-Sunflower League three times.

Talisa Stone, Perry-Lecompton

Stone received first-team all-Big Seven honors in her junior volleyball season with a team-high 305 kills on a .311 hit percentage. Stone, a middle hitter, recorded 75 blocks and 92 digs to lead the Kaws to a 23-18 record. Competing in track, Stone ranks among the state’s leaders in the high jump.

Cameryn Thomas, Free State

A multi-event athlete in track, Thomas has emerged as one of the state’s best in the long jump. Signed to compete at Kansas next year, she placed sixth in the long jump last season. In volleyball, Thomas earned first-team all-Sunflower League honors while accumulating 254 kills and 252 digs. She led the Firebirds to a share of the league title.

Lauren Willson, Tonganoxie

The leader of the Chieftains’ volleyball team, Willson recorded 302 kills in her senior season to earn first-team all-Kaw Valley League recognition. Signed to play at Hutchinson Community College, Willson added 249 digs and 39 service aces. During the spring, Willson is a key member of her school’s softball team, with a batting average above .500.

Emma Yackley, Free State

Committed to play college soccer at Creighton University, Yackley is one of the leading scorers in the Sunflower League. With an ability to launch shots from outside of the 18-yard box, Yackley scored five goals in the team’s first four games, leading the Firebirds to their best start in nearly a decade.
