Volunteer opportunities: Serve as a United Way community investment volunteer

The United Way of Douglas County currently has a need for volunteers who are interested in making an impact and helping us in our fight for the health, education and financial stability of every person in Douglas County. These opportunities include serving on the following community investment committees:

Emergency Food and Shelter Program Local Board:

Created in 1983 to supplement and expand the work of local social service agencies – both nonprofit and governmental – the Emergency Food and Shelter Program was launched as an effort to help people with economic emergencies. EFSP funding is open to all organizations that help those who are experiencing hunger or homelessness. The Douglas County EFSP Local Board is looking for new volunteer members. Responsibilities of members include allocating EFSP funds to help expand the capacity of food and shelter programs in high-need areas within the community, reviewing applications that are requesting funds and determining funding priorities for Douglas County. The board meets quarterly. Individuals who have experienced food insecurity or homelessness are encouraged to serve.

Community Impact Grant Review Committees:

To achieve our community goals of health, education and financial stability in Douglas County, the United Way provides grant funding to Douglas County social service organizations to work collectively toward these objectives. Community Impact Grant Review Committees ensure that community funds are put toward the most impactful and successful organizations by reviewing and scoring grant proposals and making allocation recommendations to the United Way Board of Directors. The United Way has opportunities to serve on its Education, Health, or Financial Stability Grant Review Committees. Volunteers for these committees should have an interest in the welfare of the community, an understanding of the social framework — including the impacts of poverty and institutional inequity — of our community, and a desire to create change through strategic investment in local programs. Volunteers must have professional, academic or lived expertise in the fields of education, health or poverty.
