LHS baseball stuns SME with 8-7 comeback win

Austin Quick’s go-ahead sacrifice fly put the finishing touches on a furious comeback in the Lawrence High baseball team’s 9-8 win over Shawnee Mission East on Thursday at LHS.

The Lions trailed the Lancers, 8-1, after three innings before roaring back to tie it with seven-run fifth.

Reese Carmona kept the Lions rolling in the sixth with a leadoff double. Devin Lauts moved Carmona to third to set the stage for Quick. Lawrence High coach Brad Stoll called upon Quick to take the mound for the save in the top of the seventh, and he retired the Lancers in order.

The Lions’ frantic fifth inning was capped by a three-run triple from Payton Cummins. Quick and Carmona added a pair of RBIs.

Lawrence High (8-10) will play next against Free State at 7 p.m. Monday at KU’s Hoglund Ballpark.
