LHS wrestling finishes 8th in regionals; 4 Lions qualify for state

After a regional tournament that resulted in four of his wrestlers qualifying for state, Lawrence High coach Pat Naughton quickly turned his attention to next week’s main event.

The LHS coach will watch Logan Farrell, AJ Powell, Relle Dye and Melle Dye compete at state, and he’s hoping his wrestlers can take the experiences they gained from regionals into the tournament.

“This week is all about just polishing up what you have, getting the right mindset and then getting down to state,” Naughton said, “because the state tournament is another animal in itself. It’s almost like a separate season.”

The tournament will especially be a new experience for the freshman Farrell, who went 4-1 at 106 pounds Saturday at LHS. He was the lone LHS freshman to qualify this season.

“He’s done a really good job,” Naughton said of Farrell’s progression this season. “The best thing about Logan is that now he gets the experience as a freshman, go through the butterflies and all that.”

Seniors Relle and Melle Dye knew they had already punched their tickets to state after advancing to the regional championship matches on Friday.

They spent most of Saturday listening to music and supporting their team on the sidelines before competing in their respective matches; however, neither wrestler was able to secure a victory. Olathe North senior Jevon Parrish defeated Relle by fall at 138 pounds, and Melle was defeated by Olathe North senior Javier Contreras via decision at 145.

Nevertheless, Naughton said it was an experience the brothers needed as they head toward state.

“It’s good for them to go through those tough matches,” he said. “And if they have to sit and wait all day, because if that happens down state, it’s going to be kind of like that.”

After regional matches started at 9 a.m., Relle and Melle didn’t participate in their matches until late in the afternoon.

“That waiting to wrestle all day … you’re trying to keep your mind off that match that’s coming up, you don’t want to get yourself falling asleep,” Naughton said. “That’s what’s best for them, to go through all that.”

For Powell, who finished 3-2 at 182 pounds on the day, his qualification means more because of his family.

“My dad never got to go to state as a wrestler in high school, so it’s a big thing,” Powell said. “And my mom has been through a lot with me going through wrestling, just having injuries and stuff has been hard on her. So it was pretty emotional today for my mom and me. I’m really glad to have her.”

As a team, LHS finished eighth in the 16-team regional with 71 points. Olathe North led all teams with 267 points.

“It’s nice,” Naughton said of his team’s performance. “We wish we could’ve got a couple more guys in (to state), but we knew it was going to be tough.”

The Class 6A state tournament will be held at Hartman Arena in Park City, beginning Friday.
