Family Promise is committed to helping families in Lawrence achieve lasting independence. Family Promise is currently seeking volunteer van drivers for Wednesday and Thursday evenings and Friday mornings and evenings. Duration of the drives last 30-45 minutes. Requirements for volunteers include:

• Over 25 for our insurance

• A good driving record

• A valid driver’s license

Horseback riding class

CLO’s Midnight Farm offers opportunities for country living, work, and recreation for kids and adults with special needs. The Midnight Farm is looking for individuals who are interested in helping adults and children with disabilities be safe and engaged in the horseback riding lessons.

Volunteers will make sure that the rider is prepared for class and then walk next to them, alongside the horse, during class. Contact Vicki Massey at vickimassey@clokan.org or at 785-979-1889 for more information.

Deliver food

The Lawrence Douglas County Housing Authority works to provide affordable housing and self-sufficiency services for low-income residents of Douglas County. LDCHA is seeking assistance with their Food Program.

Food commodity boxes from Harvesters Community Food Network are delivered once per month on the 3rd Monday of the month. LDCHA needs help delivering the boxes to the tenants in the building. A friendly chat and short visit is always good, too.

Volunteers must be able to lift heavy boxes weighing 25-50 pounds. Call Haleigh Koca at 785-832-1692 for more information.

Marketing assistant

The United Way of Douglas County brings community resources together to support a better life for residents by focusing on improvements in health, education, and financial stability. The United Way is seeking a media relations and marketing assistant to play an integral role in public/media relations and content creation for United Way of Douglas County programs.

The desired outcome from the volunteer’s efforts will be planned content designed to creatively, methodically, and strategically communicate the message of The United Way.

Help with hospice

Visiting Nurses Association provides hospice care, home health care, rehabilitation care, and private duty care. Volunteers are needed to work directly with patients and families by providing needed companionship for patients and/or respite for primary caregivers in home settings or care facilities.

Volunteers are needed for a variety of commitments from once a month to once a week depending on your availability. Mandatory hospice training will be provided. No medical knowledge is required. For more information, please contact Sarah Rooney at sarahro@kansasvna.org or at 785-843-3738.
