KU women fall to West Virginia, 73-54

West Virginia built a 16-point first-quarter lead and went on to defeat Kansas, 73-54, in Big 12 women’s basketball Monday night in Morgantown, W.Va.

The Jayhawks trailed 24-8 after one quarter and 41-18 at halftime.

Jessica Washington scored 18 points to lead Kansas, but no other Jayhawk scored in double figures. Sydney Umeri was next with eight points, and Jayde Christopher scored seven.

KU shot just 14.3 percent in the first quarter and 29.5 percent for the game, including 18.8 percent from 3-point range.

The Jayhawks (8-21, 2-16 Big 12) will play a first-round Big 12 tournament game Friday in Oklahoma City. West Virginia concluded the regular season 20-10 overall, 8-10 in the Big 12.
