Join the United Way in supporting the development and learning of young children and ensuring that all children in Douglas County enter kindergarten with the skills they need to succeed. Volunteers are needed to spend 30 minutes a week reading to small groups of children at local child care centers. A two-hour literacy training will be provided. To ensure continuity for the children in the programs, volunteers are asked to make at least a three-month commitment. For more information, please contact Shelly at 865-5030, ext. 301, or at volunteer@unitedwaydgco.org.

Rescue food

Just Food and its partners fight hunger in our community by increasing the availability of a variety of foods while reducing waste from discarded food. Just Food is looking for volunteers to rescue food that would otherwise be thrown away. Volunteer drivers are needed to pick up food from area Just Food partners and bring the donations back to Just Food. You can either drive your car or the Just Food van. Pickup times vary throughout the week. Sign up and let Just Food know your availability. One of the biggest needs is on-call drivers. Sign up today and rescue food for those in need.

Please contact Aundrea Shafer at programs@justfoodks.org for more information.

Help with lunch

The Salvation Army needs volunteers to help prepare, serve and clean up after the lunchtime feeding program on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. The hours are from 12:30 to 3 p.m. For more information, please contact Marisa at marisa_mccluer@usc.salvationarmy.org.

‘Stamp out hunger’

Harvesters, the community food bank, needs volunteers to assist with Stamp Out Hunger, The National Association of Letter Carriers’ food drive, held on the second Saturday in May each year. It is the largest one-day food drive event in the nation. Volunteers are needed to fold 80,000 grocery bags and supplies for letter carriers to distribute along their routes. By folding each and every bag, volunteers help increase the food donations from this drive by 35 percent. Volunteers can reserve bags to fold throughout the months of March and April. Contact Harvesters now to reserve your bags and sign up at fighthunger@harvesters.org or 861-7750.

Help independent seniors

Community Village of Lawrence helps neighbors remain in their homes as they age by creating a network of support to make aging at home a long-term, affordable option. Community Village Lawrence is looking for volunteers willing to assist CVL members with simple household tasks, to include services such as laundry, light housekeeping, organizing, and/or basic handyman services. Volunteers can set their own schedule and respond to requests on an as-needed basis. Please contact Sheilah Tackett at info@communityvillagelawrence.org.
