LHS girls hold off Olathe NW, 59-46

Just days after a close loss, the Lawrence High girls basketball team had a tough test with an opponent like Olathe Northwest.

Still, LHS was able to put its three-point defeat on Tuesday in the rearview mirror, and dismantled a guard-oriented Ravens squad with a commanding 59-46 victory on Senior Night Friday.

“Instead of standing flat-footed and hacking like we did on Tuesday,” Dickson said, “we moved our feet and took charges. We played much better defense. We were able to spread them out at the end and win pretty comfortably.”

The No. 7 ranked Lions (12-4, 4-3 in Sunflower League) led for nearly the entire night at LHS. In fact, after falling behind 6-2 at the 4:03 mark, Lawrence closed out the opening quarter on a 10-1 run, including four points by junior E’lease Stafford.

Stafford continued to attack Olathe Northwest by driving to the hoop in the second quarter. She scored nine of the team’s 14 second-quarter points to push Lawrence’s lead to double digits at the intermission.

The Ravens (10-6, 4-3) never pulled closer than seven points in the second half, as the Lions played with a comfortable advantage for the remainder of the contest.

“Coming back from a loss, we really used that as motivation,” Stafford said. “I know I have been slacking a little, so I had to step it up. I wanted to be more aggressive and be more of a leader.”

Stafford finished with a game-high 27 points on 9-of-17 shooting. She stuck to her game plan of attacking, which often led to fouls. She hit eight of her 10 attempts from the free-throw line, while settling for just three shots from beyond the perimeter.

Senior Olivia Lemus joined Stafford in double figures with 10 points on nine shots. Senior Skylar Drum and sophomore Hannah Stewart recorded eight and seven points, respectively.

As a team, the Lions were 21-of-56 from the floor while holding the Ravens to a 17-of-61 mark.

“Olivia and Skylar did such a tremendous job on their two best players,” Dickson said. “That gave us a good chance to get ahead and once we were ahead we could dictate how the game went.”

Lawrence will travel to Shawnee Mission North at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.
